The ASUS Maximus IX EXTREME is an E-ATX motherboard with Intel's Z270 chipset offering compatibility with Intel's processors from the 6th ("Skylake") and 7th (Kaby Lake) generations using socket LGA 1151. The 200-series of chipsets, "Union Point" offer up to 24 PCIe Express 3.0 lanes and generally bring more HSIO lanes (High Speed I/O), which allows more internal connections such as SATA or PCIe slots to be used simultaneously. As a Z270 motherboard this allows the ASUS Maximus IX EXTREME to overclock K-series processors which offer an unlocked multiplier.
In order to ease the installation of custom watercooling loops, ASUS has gone the extra mile by bestowing upon this high-end motherboard a monoblock CPU cooler. The cooler does not only cool the CPU however, it also cools the VRM and a M.2 SSD. The G1/4" connectors are equipped with sensors that shut down the system or deliver a specific sound if water comes into contact with the system. Further unique advantages of this motherboard include 10 phase power delivery and an incredible 12 4-pin fan connectors. Last but not least, perfect control over PWM fans is made easier and come installed in groups on the sides of the motherboard.

THE ASUS MAXIMUS IX EXTREME IN DETAIL
The ASUS Maximus IX EXTREME is a luxuriously featured E-ATX motherboard for enthusiasts and overclockers with Intel's Z270 chipset for Intel's CPUs from the 6000- and 7000- series. The black board offers three PCIe x16 slots, one of which comes connected to the chipset via 16 lanes, while the other PCIe slots are connected with four or 8 data links to the chipset. For expansion cards and other upgrades the board offers a PCIe x4 slot and also supports NVIDIA's SLI and AMD's CrossFireX technologies.
The motherboard comes with four DIMM slots for DDR4 RAM in fast dual-channel mode. The memory banks acces up to 64 GB RAM and, depending on the processor, support modules with a memory frequency of either 2.133 MHz (with Skylake) or 2.400 MHz (with Kaby Lake), overclocking also enables the use of memory modules clocked at up to 4.133 MHz.
In order to connect data storage devices to the board it comes with two M.2 slots for extra fast NVMe M.2 SSDs as well as four SATA 6G slots for 3,5" or 2,5" hard drives and SSDs (incl. RAID support). The M.2 ports are connected to the chipset over four PCIe lanes using the 3.0 standard, thereby enabling a data transfer rate of almost 4 GB/s in combination with hte NVMe protocol. This allows M.2 PCIe SSDs to function up to eight times faster than SATA 6G SSDs!
The I/O plate offers access to the motherboard's new Type C USB port, which is especially thing and can finally be connected in either orientation. Apart from the Type C port the motherboard offers a backwards compatible USB 3.1 Type A port. USB 3.1 ports provide speeds of up to 10 Gbit/s, twice as fast as earlier USB 3.0 connections. Input devices and other gaming peripherals can be connected to the I/O panel via six USB 3.0 ports.
If no graphics card is available, the integrated GPU of Skylake or Kaby Lake CPUs allow you to connect monitors directly to the reverse of the motherboard - for which HDMI and DisplayPort connectors are provided. Internally the motherboard comes with a wide array of headers, jumpers and buttons as well as XMP support and a range of overclocking features. Among the special features of the ASUS Maximus IX EXTREME is the ASUS Aura RGB-LED lighting and two headers for RGB-LED strips. Besides the Gigabit LAN port the board comes with a WiFi module which even supports the fast ac-standard.
